About the conductor
Leonard Bernstein (1918–1990) was one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century, internationally renowned as a conductor, composer, pianist, and educator. As music director of the New York Philharmonic from 1958 to 1969, he brought the orchestra to global prominence through major tours and recordings, while also becoming famous for his televised Young People’s Concerts, which helped introduce classical music to a broad audience. In addition to conducting, Bernstein composed major works including the musical West Side Story and important symphonic and choral pieces.
