1949

Scheveningen, Netherlands

In 1949 JM World Orchestra brought together outstanding young musicians under the guidance of world-class conductors for a full concert programme followed by an international tour.

Conductor

Igor Markevitch (1912–1983) was a Ukrainian-born conductor and composer who first gained recognition in the 1930s as a modernist composer before focusing primarily on conducting after World War II. He became known for his disciplined, highly structured interpretations and for his work with leading European orchestras, especially in French and Russian repertoire. Markevitch was particularly admired for his performances and recordings of composers such as Igor Stravinsky and Hector Berlioz, and he also played an important role in mentoring young conductors and promoting rigorous orchestral standards.

Soloist

Arthur Grumiaux (1921–1986) was a celebrated Belgian violinist admired for his elegant tone and refined interpretations of composers such as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven. Grumiaux also taught at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, influencing a generation of violinists.
