In 1991 JM World Orchestra brought together outstanding young musicians in Arvika and Stockholm in Sweden, Copenhagen in Denmark, Warsaw in Poland, Vilnius in Lithuania, Riga in Latvia, Tallinn in Estonia and Tampere in Finland, for a performance under the guidance of world-class conductors such as the Finnish conductor Okko Kamu and the British conductor Russell Harris. The JM World Orchestra is a historical program of Jeunesses Musicales International and it still represents a significant part of the history of the organisation, as well as the first international youth orchestra of its kind.

Conductor

Okko Kamu (born 1946) is a Finnish conductor who gained international attention after winning the prestigious Herbert von Karajan Conducting Competition in 1969. He has served as chief conductor of several orchestras, including the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, and has worked widely in Europe and Asia. Kamu is especially known for his interpretations of Nordic composers such as Jean Sibelius, as well as for his clear technique, energetic style, and balanced orchestral sound.

Russell Harris is a British conductor associated with orchestral performance and musical leadership, known for his work in concert preparation and collaboration with ensembles. His professional activity has focused on guiding rehearsals, shaping interpretative decisions, and contributing to orchestral projects and performances across a range of repertoire.
