1954
Hannover, Germany
In 1954 JM World Orchestra brought together outstanding young musicians in Hannover, Germany, under the guidance of world-class conductors such as Hermann Scherchen for a full concert programme followed by an international tour. The JM World Orchestra is a historical program of Jeunesses Musicales International and it still represents a significant part of the history of the organisation, as well as the first international youth orchestra of its kind.

Conductor

Hermann Scherchen (1891 – 1966) was a German conductor, who was principal conductor of the city orchestra of Winterthur from 1922 to 1950. Largely self-taught as a musician, Hermann Scherchen joined the Blüthner Orchestra as a viola player in 1907, and played with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra from 1907 to 1910. He was renowned for his adventurous programming and strong advocacy of contemporary music, particularly works by composers such as Arnold Schoenberg. He was also an influential champion of modern orchestral techniques and recording innovation, and he worked widely across Europe, leaving a significant legacy as both interpreter and educator.
