In 1951 JM World Orchestra brought together outstanding young musicians in Lisbon under the guidance of world-class conductors such as Pedro de Freitas for a full concert programme followed by an international tour. The JM World Orchestra is a historical program of Jeunesses Musicales International and it still represents a significant part of the history of the organisation, as well as the first international youth orchestra of its kind.

Conductor

Pedro de Freitas Branco (1896–1963) was a Portuguese conductor and composer. He founded the Portuguese Opera Company in 1926, and conducted the state symphony orchestra from 1934. He was known for his refined interpretations of both classical and contemporary repertoire and for helping raise the artistic standards of Portuguese orchestral performance, while also contributing to the development of the country’s musical life through concerts, premieres, and collaborations.
