In 1990 JM World Orchestra brought together outstanding young musicians in two different session: during the winter sessions were held in Berlin and Brussels, under the Berlgian conductor Pierre Bartholomée with 107 musicians from 34 countries; whereas during the summer sessions were held in Canada, with performances in Orford, Joliette, Quebec and Montreal, under the conduction of the British Vernon Handley with 101 musicians from 33 countries.
The JM World Orchestra is a historical program of Jeunesses Musicales International and it still represents a significant part of the history of the organisation, as well as the first international youth orchestra of its kind.

Conductor

Vernon Handley (1930–2008) was a highly respected British conductor best known for his advocacy of British music and his long association with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. He was particularly admired for his championing of composers such as Ralph Vaughan Williams and Sir Arnold Bax, helping to bring renewed attention to their orchestral works through performances and recordings.
Handley also worked extensively with regional orchestras in the United Kingdom, contributing to the development of orchestral standards outside London. His conducting style was known for its clarity, structural understanding, and deep commitment to the score, earning him a strong reputation both at home and internationally.
