1982

Pecs, Kecskemet, Budapest (Hungary)

In 1982 JM World Orchestra brought together outstanding young musicians in Pecs, Kecskemet and Budapest in Hungary for a performance under the Japanese conductor Hiroyuki Iwaki, assisted by the Hungarian director Andràs Ligeti. The JM World Orchestra is a historical program of Jeunesses Musicales International and it still represents a significant part of the history of the organisation, as well as the first international youth orchestra of its kind.
The orchestra brought together musicians from 21 countries in 1982.

Conductor

Hiroyuki Iwaki (1932–2006) was a Japanese conductor who played a major role in the development of Japan’s postwar orchestral culture. He conducted widely in Japan and internationally and served as music director of several orchestras, including the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (1974–1997). Known for his energetic style and wide repertoire, Iwaki was particularly active in promoting contemporary music and works by Japanese composers while also conducting the major symphonic repertoire.
