In 1987 JM World Orchestra brought together outstanding young musicians in both sides of the Berlin Wall in Germany, for a performance under the guidance of world-class conductors such as the British conductor Jeffrey Tate and the German conductor Gerd Albrecht, as well as the Welsh conductor Grant Llewellyn. The JM World Orchestra is a historical program of Jeunesses Musicales International and it still represents a significant part of the history of the organisation, as well as the first international youth orchestra of its kind.
In 1987 the JMWO brought together musicians from 34 countries.

Conductor

Jeffrey Tate (1943–2017) was a distinguished British conductor known for his refined musicality and extensive international career. Despite being born with spina bifida, he became one of the leading conductors of his generation, working with major orchestras and opera houses across Europe. He served as principal conductor of the Royal Opera House and later held chief positions with orchestras such as the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra. Tate was particularly admired for his interpretations of Mozart, Wagner, and French repertoire, as well as for his elegance and clarity in both opera and symphonic music.
Gerd Albrecht (1935–2014) was a German conductor known for his broad repertoire and strong commitment to contemporary music. He held major leadership positions, including music director of the Czech Philharmonic, where he contributed to artistic development and international touring. Albrecht was especially respected for championing modern and lesser-known works, while also conducting standard symphonic and operatic repertoire with major European orchestras throughout his career.


Grant Llewellyn (born 1960) is a Welsh conductor known for his energetic leadership and clear musical direction. He has served as music director of the North Carolina Symphony and has worked extensively with orchestras and opera companies in Europe and the United States. Llewellyn is particularly appreciated for his interpretations of British repertoire, including works by composers such as Edward Elgar and Ralph Vaughan Williams. He has also been active in recordings and international guest conducting, building a reputation for musical precision and collaborative artistry.
